The Big Three-O

I am turning thirty in about two months.  I am not worried about it.  I have thought about the whole getting older thing and for now, it doesn’t bother me.  I have loved my roaring twenties.  I have met the husband I was meant to marry.  I have had three healthy births of three healthy boys that bring me joy and exhaustion everyday.  I am a home owner, for better or worse, and I have a small business that is steadily growing.  I have girlfriends that are quite literally salt of the earth women.  I am healthy, reasonably attractive and very humble.  (hahahahahah…ha…sigh)

The future looks bright and thirty doesn’t scare me.

I am looking forward to celebrating it.  I have been thinking about the celebration since the beginning of the year. What is the appropriate way to usher in the new decade?  Is it a big catered black tie affair? Is it karaoke and margaritas?  Is it a trip back up to the cottage for reflection and repose?  It has taken me awhile to decide but I think I have found the perfect way to celebrate my birthday.

-dental expenses
Wisdom teeth are so rotten that one of them has an exposed nerve.  She is in a lot of pain and could not eat the other day. Est removal cost 1500.00 plus? Just got an estimate on the phone.  She needs to go to a consult for the complete charges. She has ground her teeth.. they think from diet or stress to the point where the enamel has worn off the tops of her teeth.  She had moderate periodontal disease. She has a lot of bone loss .  The dentist does believe that her teeth can be saved however. She needs a special cleaning which will be 924. Two fillings 316.  They put her on an antibiotic and special mouth rince and I bought her a bite guard to wear at night to prevent further damage . All could be close to 2800ish. minimum.  She will need these special cleanings every 6 months but I am not sure if that will be the charge each time.
Let me know your suggestions.
Have a nice day

In August of 2009 the Michigan Darfur Coalition introduced the Refugee Assistance Program to assist newly arrived Sudanese from Darfur.  Or as Tiffany and I like to call them, New Americans.  Currently the Michigan Darfur Coalition does not have the financial support neccessary to fund the services needed to pay for these dental expenses. Our financial capabilities are helping to supplement the assistance that is already available.  St. Vincent’s Catholic Charities is expecting Darfuri refugees in the Lansing area this year and there are seven new arrivals expected by March 24th, 2010 in Grand Rapids.  I want to be able to do more!

Many who know me would report that I am a sucker for a good cause.  Especially in regards to women and children who are living in poverty or under severe oppression.  80% of the people pushed into the refugee camps from Darfur our war widows and children.  For more information on genocide prevention click here. Now the people of Darfur are trickling out of their war torn country and seeking refuge with us.  I say “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” Well actually, Emma Lazarus said it but I totally agree.
In honor of the lessons of social justice I have learned in my roaring twenties I am inviting all of you to participate in The Mother Flippin’ Bar Crawl.  I am hoping to raise money to support the MDC Refugee Assistance Program, grow the MDC online presence in social media and chronicle the journey on my blog.  I am really excited about this idea and you should be too because your coming with me. When is it?  Umm, I’ll get back to you.  My birthday is May 23rd, so somewhere’s around there:)

If you want to help me plan my birthday fundraiser bash let me know.  You can follow the MDC on Twitter @MichiganDarfur or me @Mother_Flippin.  And of course there is the Michigan Darfur Coalition Facebook Fan Page that only has 200 fans! What is up with that anyway???!!!

The fun is always in the journey.

  1. I love you. For so many reasons. I'll have to find a way to celebrate without being there.
And this also inspired me to actually wear my night guard (I'm a grinder too – this scared me a little!)
And don't you listen to Glenn Beck – you are not supposed to say “social justice” – it's the sign of the beast. (Wink, wink – check out March 18th's Colbert Report for a very funny spin on this, Comedy Central's website).

  2. I will totally check that out! Thanks for the heads up and I love you too. P.S. My favorite Janis Joplin song is Summertime. Especially after a full summer day with sun tea in hand. perfection.

  3. What an AMAZING idea!! Seriously. I am super impressed by your creative philanthropy. (By the way – my question for the April Carnival of Natural Parenting will be about volunteering with toddlers, perhaps you can visit and leave me some suggestions?) :)
    Have a great 30th birthday – the 30's really aren't that bad!

  4. Hi Dionna!

Thank you and I just read the details on the April Carnival. I will check back and offer suggestions. I definitely have opinions on that topic:)

  5. Tasha,
Have you checked out the Pepsi website? I don't know if their deadline has past to submit your idea to raise money and people vote for which one they like best. Forgive me, I don't remember what it is called. I love your ideas, stories, and inspiration! May God continue to bless you, your family, and all who are inspired by you!

  6. Thank you Amanda. I will look into that. It may be super easy since I already have the idea written out. Cute & Paste. Thank you for your kind words and I hope the same blessing for you and yours.

No need to sign in or nothin' honey. Share your thoughts here!
